Global Reading Method

How the whole-word method works and why it's effective for children with special needs

What is Global Reading?

Global reading (the whole-word method) is a scientifically-based approach where children memorize entire words as visual images rather than decoding them letter by letter. The method has been used in special education for over 40 years and has proven effective for children with various developmental needs.

How Does the Method Work?

Children are shown flashcards with words in large red font on a white background. Each word is spoken aloud. Display takes 1-2 seconds per word. Each session shows 5 words, with 2-3 sessions per day.

  • 5 sets of 5 words = 25 words per session
  • Automatic word rotation using sliding window method
  • Audio pronunciation of each word in the selected language

Scientific Evidence

Research shows that children with Down syndrome, autism, and other developmental conditions perceive visual information significantly better than auditory. Global reading leverages this strength, transforming reading from a complex analytical task into a natural memorization process.
